Patrick Michel, est astrophysicien, directeur de recherche de classe exceptionnelle au CNRS à l’Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, responsable scientifique à l’Agence Spatiale Européenne et Professeur Global Fellow à l’Université de Tokyo. He leads or contributes significantly to research projects and space missions devoted to asteroids and planetary defense.. He is notably the scientific manager of the ESA Hera mission which, with NASA's DART mission, carried out the first asteroid deflection test., et de la mission RAMSES (coopération ESA-JAXA) qui rendra visite à l’astéroïde Apophis en 2029. Il a notamment reçu la Médaille d’Argent de la NASA, the Carl Sagan Medal of the American Division of Planetary Sciences for his excellence in his communication with the general public, the Gold Medals of the City of Nice and Saint-Tropez, et a été nommé au grade de Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite. The asteroid 7156 Patrickmichel was attributed to him by the International Astronomical Union. Son dernier ouvrage paru aux Editions Odile Jacob s’intitule « La défense planétaire contre les astéroïdes » avec une préface de Sir Brian May (guitariste du groupe de rock Queen et astrophysicien).
