900 years of history contemplate you !

Founded in the 12th century, the Abbey conceals wonders, including the recumbent statue of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the one who was twice queen, in France and England, that of Henry II Plantagenet and the famous Richard Coeur de Lion.

Until the Revolution, nuns and monks succeeded each other, led by an Abbess, which testifies to the singularity of the Abbey from its foundation. From the 18th century until 1963, it was one of the most feared prisons in France.

Today, the Royal Abbey welcomes thousands of visitors attracted by the majesty of this place steeped in history, its cultural program, exhibitions and its modern art museum.
